My ‘Favorite Quotations’ on Facebook-

On August 6, 2011 MGMT played at the US Open of Surf. A free MGMT show at Huntington Beach in itself is enough but what really left an impression was Andrew stepping out wearing an eclectic outfit made up of his red and white stripped pants previously seen in an NME photo shoot, and a button up paisley looking shirt. It was definitely not what anyone expected a man with a more-than-beach-worthy body to wear to a show…on the beach. The irony of Andrew’s clothing choices was getting hard to ignore. This is a man who wears black jeans and a white t-shirt for appearances at Fashion Week and then hits the beach with an outfit that’s definitely worthy of making a fashion statement.
There were many other moments that made the U.S. Open of Surf so memorable - The Left Shoe Incident, Fuck Yeah Brah, and What I Want to Know is Who’s Drinking That Beer? Godzilla? Then there was the music. MGMT debuted their cover of Broken Arrows by England’s Glory joined by Jennifer Herrema. They took their encore of The Handshake way out there and left fans wondering what the hell they just experienced. Andrew even changed up the lyrics and sang “people always told me, don’t forget your roots. I know I can feel them underneath my missing left shoe”. It was a collection of all of these things that made the US Open of Surf your # 2 Favorite Andrew Moment of 2011.
On August 7, 2011 MGMT fans finally laid their eyes on the much anticipated footage of Andrew surfing. The video was taken at Huntington Beach as Andrew surfed before MGMT’s performance at the US Open of Surf on August 6, 2011.
Andrew talked about his first experience surfing at Huntington Beach, “Yeah well I went out and just uh paddled straight into a barrel and then reformed double barrel…it’s really cool.” Fans thought so too. It was your # 8 Favorite Andrew Moment of 2011.
just a little something i took at the us open.
Why do I really like this?
October SPIN Magazine
The psychedelic rock band are no strangers to the beach. They recorded their last album, Congratulations, in Malibu, CA, where frontman Andrew Vanwyngarden (above) surfed every morning. This interest also influenced the LP: “There’s a surfing thread throughout the record,” he told SPIN. “When you’re surfing, there’s a specific break you’re paddling to. And when the waves are really good you say, ‘It’s working.’ The song kind of has a surf-y vibe. It’s like surfing on ecstasy!”

“What I want to know is, whos drinking that beer?! Godzilla? Maybe King Kong?” -Andrew VanWyngarden
