On August 10, 2011 MGMT played a little show tucked off the winding hilly roads of Highway 1, in the middle of a lavish forest, steps away from the ocean. Photos and words struggle to help capture the feeling if you weren’t lucky enough to be there.
The venue was small, the feeling was intimate, and you could watch MGMT while literally sitting on the same stage they were playing on. The setting and performance were as unique as their music. The lights and sounds bounced off the canopy of trees extending to the sky yet somehow finding a place deep inside you. In the end you were left with a new appreciation of how much your surroundings effect and dictate your perception of a musical performance. It was as if MGMT were meant to play on that stage.
MGMT at Henry Miller Library was a collection of some of their most perfect musical performances. I Found A Whistle, 4th Dimensional Transition, and Siberian Breaks were definite standouts, and overall MGMT’s performance at Big Sur was your # 5 Favorite Andrew Moment of 2011 (although my personal # 1).
